Membership

The vision of the Pharmaceutical Society of Western Australia (PSWA) is to be recognised as a major facilitator of pharmacy research and practice development with a mission to benefit the health of Western Australians by investing in pharmacy research, practice and education.

Whilst not a membership driven organisation the opportunity exists for pharmacists and intern pharmacists to become members of PSWA and be part of the organisation that  has shaped the future of the pharmacy profession in this State since 1892.

The criteria for current membership and the eligibility to become a new member are outlined below.

All persons who were members of the Pharmaceutical Society of Western Australia on 31 December 2013 continue to be members of the PSWA following the establishment of the WA Branch of the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia (PSA), unless they have since become ineligible for membership or resigned.

Categories of membership

The PSWA’s constitution describes five categories of membership:

  1. Ordinary Members
  2. Life Members
  3. Honorary Members
  4. Fellows
  5. Intern Members

Most of the PSWA’s existing members at 31 December 2013 now hold Ordinary membership. Members who held Life or Honorary membership at 31 December 2013 have been elected to the equivalent category by the Board.

Only the categories of Ordinary and Intern membership can be applied for (by pharmacists, former pharmacists and intern pharmacists respectively). Fellowships and Life and Honorary memberships are granted at the discretion of the Board of the PSWA.

The PSWA constitution defines:

  • Pharmacist as a person registered as a pharmacist in Australia who holds General, Specialist or Non-practising registration
  • Intern Pharmacist as a person registered as a pharmacist in Australia who holds Provisional or Limited registration
  • Former Pharmacist as a person who has held registration as pharmacist at some time pursuant to the National Law or the Pharmacy Act 1964 WA (repealed), but does not currently hold registration as a pharmacist pursuant to the National Law

Eligibility for Ordinary membership (pharmacists and former pharmacists)

The PSWA’s constitution provides three pathways to Ordinary membership for pharmacists:

  1. Pharmacists who are Ordinary Financial members of the WA Branch of the PSA and reside in Western Australia are automatically Ordinary Members of the PSWA. Persons eligible for membership of the PSWA via this pathway are not required to apply for membership.
  2. Other registered pharmacists may apply for Ordinary membership of the PSWA by completing the application form available here and submitting it to PSWA.
  3. Persons who have held registration as pharmacist at some time pursuant to the National Law or the Pharmacy Act 1964 WA (repealed), but do not currently hold registration as a pharmacist pursuant to the National Law may also apply for membership.

Eligibility for Intern membership (intern pharmacists)

The PSWA’s constitution also provides two pathways to Intern membership for intern pharmacists:

  1. Intern pharmacists who are Ordinary Financial members of the WA Branch of the PSA and reside in Western Australia are automatically Intern Members of the PSWA. Persons eligible for membership of the PSWA via this pathway are not required to apply for membership.
  2. Other registered intern pharmacists may apply for Intern membership of the PSWA by completing the application form available here and submitting it to PSWA.

Please note:

  • Pharmacists and intern pharmacists unsure of their registration number or the type of registration they hold can check the publicly available register of pharmacists at www.ahpra.gov.au
  • Applications for ordinary and intern membership will be considered from registered pharmacists and intern pharmacists whether they reside in Western Australia or not
  • Applications for ordinary and intern membership will be considered at the next meeting of the Board of the PSWA following receipt of the application.
